Reduced Scale Experiments on Fire Spread Involving Multiple Informal Settlement Dwellings

چکیده

Fire disasters in informal settlements (also referred to as slums, shantytowns, favelas, etc.) are a major challenge worldwide, with single incident being able displace thousands of people. Numerous factors including dwelling spacing, material type, topography, weather, fuel loads, roads, and more influence fire spread. Conducting large-scale experiments quantify understand these phenomena is difficult costly. Hence, it would be beneficial if Reduced Scale Experiments (RSE) could developed study the phenomena. Previous research has demonstrated that 1/4th scale settlement (ISD) RSE can sufficiently capture behaviour dynamics within dwellings. The objective this work develop methodology for multi-dwelling ISD scaling such spread captured. This paper carries out series RSEs (a) number dwellings, (b) orientation windows, door openings, (c) cladding material, (d) wind effects, (e) distance between dwellings (f) load on Results compared previous experiments. It shown geometric suitable capturing was found contribute significantly spread, but type cladding, orientation, structural members used also affects rates. comparative results full-scale (FSEs) shows peak temperatures were comparable had similar profiles. A good correlation exists FSEs terms characteristics, time (scaled or unscaled) does not correlate well FSEs. Further needed before reliably predicting especially when involved, due complex interaction parameters difficulty flame impingement.

Image Sources for Informal Settlement Management

Informal settlements are a common feature of developing countries. In South Africa the improvement of living conditions in these settlements and the upgrading to formal housing types are regarded as being of central importance to the nation’s development. Effective settlement improvement and upgrading activities, which we here term “management”, require adequate spatial data. To date, the acqui...

Influence of Slope on Fire Spread Rate

75 Abstract—Data demonstrate the effect of slope on heading and backing fires burning through woody fuels. The data indicate that the upper limit of heading fire rate of spread is defined by the rate of spread up a vertical fuel array, and the lower limit is defined by the rate of spread of a backing fire burning downslope. The minimum spread rate is found to occur at nominally –16 degrees slope.

ON QUASILINEAR ELLIPTIC SYSTEMS INVOLVING MULTIPLE CRITICAL EXPONENTS

In this paper, we consider the existence of a non-trivial weaksolution to a quasilinear elliptic system involving critical Hardyexponents. The main issue of the paper is to understand thebehavior of these Palais-Smale sequences. Indeed, the principaldifficulty here is that there is an asymptotic competition betweenthe energy functional carried by the critical nonlinearities. Thenby the variatio...

WRF-Fire Simulation of Lateral Fire Spread in the Bendora Fire on 18 January 2003

On the afternoon of 18 January 2003, a number of separate fires located to the west of Canberra, Australia, began major runs under extreme fire weather conditions, and impacted upon the city. These events were well documented by a range of instruments, including a multispectral line-scanning instrument attached to an aircraft. Analysis of the data collected revealed that a number of the fires h...
